Keep in mind that networking isn't just about the quantity of contacts, it's actually about the quality. Don't be afraid to reach out to high end decision makers and people "in the know" within companies and industries of interest to you and your business. These are your quality contacts. During these networking sessions, explain your career plans and business agenda, and ask if they would spend 15 or so minutes talking with you and answering some questions. Most people will be flattered and immediately say yes. When you get into full contact with them, never ask for a job, but do ask for advice and referrals. These types of meetings are traditionally known as informational interviews.
